Update from Grafham Flyers OnBoard Team

July 11, 2016

Grafham Flyers OnBoard Team are on top of their game again, here's an update from Gordon Baines, GWC OnBoard and GCA Youth Officer…

"Back in June the annual Grafham Training weekend was held at the Centre for all CSYSA (Cambridgeshire Schools Youth Sailing Association) and OnBoard sailors. These young sailors come and receive training and enter into a mini regatta on the in preparation for this year main NSSA regatta.

The weekend was a great success with most of our OnBoard team in attendance, ranging from James, Matilda, and Ed and Max in their Pico’s, Ben in his RS tera whilst Tom, Dave and Max were sailing with the big guns in their Laser’s. Training was split into four different groups, receiving training to their current level off ability to help develop the team in readiness for the National Regatta to be held in a few weeks’ time as well as other Cambs Youth league events.

Sunday, was Regatta Day, where all sailors sailed together and also started on the same start line, this could have been interesting, but worked extremely well.

The weather held off with sunshine and wind all day, some challenging conditions at time but the team were awesome and coped extremely well.

First Pico was Max Findlater, Congratulations Max with Matilda, James and Ed not far behind him.

Tom finished in the top 7 in he’s Laser, unfortunately poor Dave broke his mast on the 3rd race and had to abandon the racing for the rest of the day.

The Top 3 were as follows:  Tom Proctor in his National 12, Harry Moffat in his Laser and 1st place overall, our very own Max Oscroft!

Congratulations to Max who has certainly come on leaps and bounds since he’s first visit to OnBoard all those years ago.   We wish Max continued success this season, as we feel he is certainly getting to grips with the Laser and giving all those at the top of their game a run for their money!

July is a very exciting time for the OnBoard Sailors, its NSSA National Regatta time again with just a few of them going off to Gorleston, Gt Yarmouth for this year’s Regatta.  Max Oscroft and Abi Clark will be attending and heading up the team, along with Max Findlater in a Pico.  Both Dave Clancy and Tom King Venables have received funding to also attend in their own Laser’s.  This year’s event should be great fun for them all out on the sea, watch this space for more updates.

Before the NSSA Regatta, the team have been invited to attend the America’s Cup in Portsmouth as part of their Youth Engagement Day.   This is an invitational event only, aimed at clubs and schools in and around the Portsmouth area and Youth development clubs around the UK.  Grafham OnBoard have been invited due to all of their current successes this year, which we are extremely proud off.   They will get to meet all the America’s Cup Sailors and try out various simulators through the day. This will be a great opportunity for all of our young sailors!

I would like to wish everyone another successful sailing event and look forward to seeing you all on the water.

Many thanks and keep watching our website for more updates from our OnBoard Team through the summer!"
